It's 2025, and the marketing drive for the Sonic kart racing title aim to evoke the classic Sega vs. Nintendo battle. The latest commercial for the blue speedster's kart racer apparently displays pixelated footage of Mario Kart World, employing it to suggest that the opposition's game does not fully utilize its free-roaming structure.
Critiquing the Rival Title
"We all know that kart racing game, it's enjoyable, there's no need to feature it," the promo starts. "But what if you could blast through and compete on another level?" The video then goes on to emphasize key of CrossWorlds' key aspects, including deep car personalization and cross-platform multiplayer.
"Alternatively, perhaps you want to drive around on the open road?" the voiceover poses, full of irony.
A History of Competition
Although this isn't the opening salvo that the creators behind Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds have targeted Nintendo's game, it is certainly the bluntest they have been regarding the head-to-head battle. The promo also echoes a retro promo for the classic Sega console that informed fans about the system's "blast processing" capabilities. Back then, Sega emphasized its system's edge by featuring a race car racing on a circuit. Toward the end, it compared the SNES to an old RV that had Nintendo's classic running on a old TV fastened to the rear of the car hastily attached.
Availability
Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds arrives next week on the 25th of September for Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Sony's current console, Windows PC, Xbox One, and Series X. Though, those who purchase early can jump in ahead of launch... unless they are on the Nintendo platform. Welp.
