The US central bank lowered borrowing costs on midweek, marking the second reduction in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.
Move Comes at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank
The decision to cut the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 4% to 3.75% comes at an extraordinary juncture for the Fed. The authority has been under immense pressure to cut rates despite persistent inflation.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Shifts
In a announcement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the release reads. “Price increases has risen and remains moderately high.”
Federal Closure Complicates Central Bank’s Task
The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the central bank’s task. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve usually analyzes labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of new jobs created to the economy and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the shutdown, and gave a relatively bleak snapshot of the jobs market in August.
The figure of jobs added to the market in the summer month was lower by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.
Alternative Reports Show Ongoing Slowdown
Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in the start of last month, it halted its publication when the shutdown started. Employment data company ADP reported recently that the private sector eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has fallen significantly,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had earlier said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Reveals Moderate Increase
Though BLS’s jobs report has been paused, the bureau still released its price statistics for September that indicated that prices are going up, although slowly. Prices rose 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In spring, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
